Ariana Grande Throws SNL Cast for a ‘Wicked’ Loop in New Promo

Ariana Grande isn’t in Kansas anymore. The singer-songwriter/actress—who stars as Galinda Upland/Glinda the Good in the upcoming filmed adaptation of Wicked—is hosting this week’s Saturday Night Live with musical guest Stevie Nicks.

In a new just-released promo, Grande tells members of the SNL cast that she’s “so excited” to be back hosting—but first, she has a couple of conditions. “I would really prefer to not do anything Wicked or Wizard of Oz related,” she says.

Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, Marcello Hernandez, and Andrew Dismukes are then revealed dressed as the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man, respectively.

The cast members share an awkward glance before Dismukes asks Grande, “May we come back in one hour?”

Saturday’s episode marks Grande’s second time hosting SNL, and the fourth time she’s guested on the show overall. She first appeared as a musical guest for the Season 40 premiere in September 2014 (hosted by Chris Pratt), where she performed songs from her album My Everything, and also played She-Ra in the “Actions Figures” sketch.

Grande made her hosting debut the following season in March 2016, for which she was also the musical guest. Most recently, she was the musical guest on March 9, 2024 alongside host Josh Brolin; she also appeared in that episode’s “People Pleaser” and “Moulin Rouge!” sketches.

Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, hits theaters on November 22. In addition to Grande, the film stars Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, and Ethan Slater; SNL writer and cast member Bowen Yang also appears as Pfannee, one of Glinda’s college friends.

Grande’s SNL return airs this Saturday October 12th at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.
