After months of speculation—will John Mulaney knock one of the nightly network hosts out of contention for Outstanding Talk Series? Will Conan O’Brien help Hot Ones see its first Emmy nod in the same category? And why the hell is John Oliver competing against Saturday Night Live again?—the 2024 Emmy nominations have finally been announced.
At 11:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. LA time), Emmy winners Tony Hale (Veep) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary) began announcing a selection of this year’s Emmy nominations, comprising shows that ran between June 2023 and May 2024. While The Bear broke an Emmy record for a comedy series with 23 nominations, you’re reading LateNighter because you’re interested in how your favorite late-night shows fared.
Among one of the biggest surprises: John Mulaney, who we previously reported had the potential to be nominated in three different categories, was only recognized for his appearance on David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. Which was a bit of a surprise considering how much acclaim he has received for his work on Everybody’s in LA, including nabbing the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk or Sketch.
Here’s how the nominations shook out for some of the bigger categories:
