The Daily Show is coming back from summer vacation with Jon Stewart behind the desk—just on an unusual night.
LateNighter has learned that Stewart will host the Comedy Central show’s first episode back on Tuesday, September 8, following its five-week summer hiatus.
With only a handful of exceptions, Stewart has hosted The Daily Show on Monday nights since returning to the show in February 2024. But with Monday, September 7 falling on Labor Day, he’ll shift his weekly appearance by one night to kick off the show’s fall run.
It will be Stewart’s first non-Monday hosting appearance in nearly a year. The last came on the Thursday after ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air, when Stewart helmed a biting “government-approved” edition of The Daily Show that ultimately became the show’s 2026 Emmy submission.
With more than a month’s worth of political news and other developments to catch up on, the TDS team should have no shortage of material waiting for them.
After September 8, Stewart isn’t expected back behind the desk until Monday, September 21. The show will be dark Monday, September 14, one night after the 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, allowing staffers to travel back to New York following the ceremony.
There’s no word yet on who will join Stewart as his guest for Tuesday’s return, nor has Comedy Central announced which of the show’s rotating correspondent-hosts will helm Wednesday and Thursday’s editions. That will likely be announced Tuesday morning.
