First on LateNighter: Michael Che’s next stand-up special is headed to Netflix.
The “Weekend Update” co-anchor will tape his third special for the streamer next month at First Avenue in Minneapolis, with four shows scheduled across two nights: August 28 and 29 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
News of the taping comes a little over a month after Che first teased the special in a very Michael Che way: by asking his followers where he was supposed to promote it.
“i’ll be promoting a standup special in like 2 months.. but i don’t really do a lotta press.. so what are the platforms that people f*ck wit now?” Che wrote at the time.
Then came the process of elimination.
“rogans finished, right..?”
“shannon sharpe prolly just gonna ask me about other people..”
“the train one..? i already did hot ones..”
“whats like the new sh*t?”
The new special will mark Che’s third solo hour for Netflix, following Michael Che Matters in 2016 and Michael Che: Shame the Devil in 2021. More recently, Che teamed with Colin Jost for the one-off special Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark, a stand-up showcase that aired live on Peacock from Brooklyn’s Bell House in 2024.
Che is expected to return for his 12th season as “Weekend Update” co-anchor when Saturday Night Live kicks off its 52nd season on September 26.
Che, who joined SNL in 2014, is now one of the show’s longest-tenured cast members. He currently ranks fifth all-time, behind only Kenan Thompson, Darrell Hammond, Seth Meyers, and Jost.
Tickets for the Minneapolis tapings are available now through AXS.
Che has routinely visited us here in Minneapolis the last few years, often showing up to perform at tiny clubs (and even a hair salon!) with same-day notice. Glad to have secured my tix for this one!
