Will Ferrell is back in Studio 8H, and it doesn’t take long for him to start yelling at someone to get off something.
The first promo for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live Season 51 finale finds Ferrell entering the studio alongside Chloe Fineman and Sarah Sherman, where his polite request that an unseen Andrew Dismukes “get off the stage” quickly escalates into the kind of suburban-dad meltdown that helped launch Ferrell’s SNL career in the first place.
“Oh my God. Will, we’re so excited to have you here this week,” Fineman tells him.
“Yeah, we’re big fans,” Sherman adds.
“Gosh, you guys, thanks. I’m really excited to be back,” Ferrell says, before abruptly turning his attention elsewhere. “Hey, Andrew? Need you to do me a favor and get off the stage, okay? Thanks.”
From there, Ferrell makes small talk with Fineman and Sherman about how little the studio has changed. Sherman notes that “they even kept the asbestos,” a joke Ferrell politely declares himself “delighted by”—before snapping back into rage mode.
“Get off the damn stage!” he yells.
“I see you’re showing off for Chloe and Sarah,” Ferrell continues, hitting full belt-removal territory. “Well, I’m gonna give you a little show-off of my own. I’m gonna give you the beating of a lifetime in front of these gorgeous, talented ladies. How’s that?”
After Ferrell exits frame, Fineman and Sherman join in, yelling, “Get off the stage!” He returns seconds later.
“That wasn’t Andrew,” he says.
Asked who it was, Ferrell sheepishly replies: “Paul McCartney… You guys are gonna have to find a new host.”
For those well-versed in Ferrell’s SNL history, “Get Off the Shed” is legendary. A sketch he originated while at The Groundlings, it saw Ferrell play a mild-mannered suburban dad making ordinary barbecue small talk, only to repeatedly erupt at his kids to get off the shed.
Ferrell performed the character at his 1995 SNL audition and has credited it with getting him cast. It went on to become his first breakout sketch on the show, debuting during his first episode as a cast member with host Mariel Hemingway and later returning with Christine Baranski and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Ferrell returns this weekend for his sixth time hosting SNL, with Paul McCartney serving as musical guest for the fifth time. The episode will mark the show’s Season 51 finale.
