John Oliver Doubles Down on Buc-ee’s After Chain Targets Another Beaver

Two weeks after John Oliver dared Buc-ee’s to sue him, the Texas gas station giant has indeed filed another trademark lawsuit.

Just not against him.

So Oliver is doubling down.

On Sunday night’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver returned to Buc-ee’s after learning that the litigious travel-center chain had sued Beaver’s Mini Mart, a small convenience store in Beavercreek, Ohio, claiming its cartoon beaver logo is too similar to Buc-ee’s own.

The federal lawsuit, filed July 28—two days after Oliver’s original segment—argues that the Mini Mart’s smiling, wide-eyed beaver and use of red could cause consumers to believe the two businesses are affiliated.

“Yep, turns out, they’re still filing lawsuits,” Oliver said. “You might be trying to name the Buc-ee’s beaver Mitch McConnell, because it seems this bitch will not quit.”

Oliver had spent a segment of his July 26 show detailing Buc-ee’s history of suing smaller businesses over cartoon-animal mascots, ultimately unveiling his own deliberately provocative “Buc-Off” logo featuring Last Week Tonight’s seven-foot squirrel, Mr. Nutterbutter.

The show then began selling “Buc-Off” merchandise for Hunger Free America while essentially daring Buc-ee’s to come after HBO.

So far, Oliver revealed Sunday, the stunt has raised “almost half a million dollars” for the charity.

Meanwhile, Buc-ee’s went after Beaver’s Mini Mart instead.

Oliver argued that the latest case was especially egregious given the differences between the two businesses. Beaver’s Mini Mart has been operating under its name since at least 2019 and has no gas pumps, while Buc-ee’s only opened its first Ohio location in April—a 74,000-square-foot travel center roughly 16 miles away.

“There’s no way anyone’s confusing their local convenience store with a gasoline Valhalla 20 minutes away by car,” Oliver said.

There’s also the small matter of Beaver’s Mini Mart being located in a city called Beavercreek, where beaver imagery is not exactly hard to come by.

Oliver highlighted Beavercreek High School’s longtime beaver mascot, the town’s beaver-themed businesses and an assortment of fiberglass beavers around town. He also celebrated local businesses that have rallied behind the Mini Mart by adding beavers to their own logos, while a T-shirt company is selling merchandise to help fund the store’s legal defense. That fundraiser has indeed drawn support from customers and businesses around the region.

“I do love that they’ve clearly gone full ‘I am Spartacus’ on a rodent-themed gas station chain,” Oliver said.

All of which has prompted Last Week Tonight to extend its own campaign.

Oliver said the “Buc-Off” store had originally been scheduled to close September 8. Instead, “as long as Buc-ee’s is suing that Mini Mart in Beavercreek, it’s staying fucking open.”

Mr. Nutterbutter then returned wearing a Beaver’s Mini Mart T-shirt, though Oliver noted that the giant squirrel seemed disappointed that Buc-ee’s still hadn’t taken their bait.

“Is that because you wanted them to sue us, and lose, and then we’d get to film a big musical number in Times Square where we tell them to eat shit, and then later they die?” Oliver asked.

“Yes,” Mr. Nutterbutter replied.

“It could still happen,” Oliver assured him. “Especially because our store is still open.”
