Before Mad TV became the first late-night sketch show to give Saturday Night Live legitimate competition in decades, Fax Bahr helped create another comedy institution: Fire Marshal Bill.
The writer-producer—and co-creator of Mad TV—joins Mark Malkoff on this week’s episode of Inside Late Night, where he reflects on launching Fox’s long-running sketch franchise, losing future SNL stars Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, and Chris Kattan to Lorne Michaels during casting, and collaborating with Jim Carrey to create one of In Living Color’s most memorable recurring characters.
He also shares stories about chasing then-Mad TV cast member Artie Lange through the Fox lot during a failed intervention, working with Robin Williams on a 40th birthday tribute to Steven Spielberg, and helping transform unused footage from Apocalypse Now into the acclaimed documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse.
