Will Forte‘s mom is ever closer to being ready for primetime.
During his Thursday night visit to ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Saturday Night Live vet shared an update on the sketch comedy show he has been developing, starring his 82-year-old mother, Patti.
Forte first teased his idea for the show back when it was in its earlier stages, during a 2021 appearance on the Smartless podcast, and last shared an update in October on The Daily Beast‘s Last Laugh pod..
Recounting the idea’s origin for Kimmel, Forte said that when he was on SNL (from 2002-2010), “my mother would call me, and she and her friend Carol would always have these ideas that they thought that I should try to turn into sketches.”
Alas, “They were, to put it kindly, not really the kind of ideas that I would really do,” Forte said, “so I would always just say, ‘Mom, maybe we save it for The Patti Forte Sketch Show.’ Then over the years I was like, I’ve got to do that show.”
Now titled Will Forte’s Mom Has a Sketch Show, each episode will document Patti and Carol’s development, writing, and rehearsing of material, after which they perform the sketches at the end.
“It is insanely fun,” good son Forte effused. “They have no acting experience, no writing experience. They’re just magical people. But, like, they kind of have no business being in this position.”
Forte says the show is now post-production, but he brought a clip, in which he and fellow SNL alum Vanessa Bayer lead Patti and Carol, also age 82, through a character workshop.
“The sketches at the end have all these incredible guest performers,” Forte shared, including “my buddies from SNL—I can’t really say who.”

Forte can currently be seen in Sunny Nights, the dark comedy series that made its U.S. debut this week on Hulu. In it, he plays straight-laced Martin, who teams up with his loose cannon sister Vicky (The Good Place‘s D’Arcy Carden) to set up a spray tan business in Sydney. There, they become entangled in Australia’s criminal underworld.
