On Monday night’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took a detour from comedy to deliver an impassioned plea about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza—and noting the U.S. government’s complicity in it.
At the end of “A Closer Look” segment mocking Donald Trump’s bizarre comments during his trip to Scotland, Meyers turned serious as he highlighted Trump’s response to a question about Israel’s blockade of aid into Gaza—where, instead of addressing the humanitarian crisis, Trump complained that no one thanked him for sending food aid. “We gave $60 million two weeks ago, and nobody even acknowledged it. For food. And–it’s terrible. You really at least want to have somebody say, ‘Thank you,’” Trump said.
Meyers didn’t hold back in his critique, noting, “We need to feed the children. We need to end the killing. We need a ceasefire and to free the hostages. But only Trump could respond with, ‘Ahem—does anyone have anything to say to me?’ Like a Doordash driver looking for a rating.”
Acknowledging the shift in tone, Meyers said, “This is a comedy show and I know a lot of people are going to say, why are you talking about this? Just make jokes. And we try every day. We try. But we are also human beings and we are appalled by the unspeakable horrors currently unfolding in Gaza.”
Meyers echoed a warning that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has been sounding for months. Sanders stated, “It is 31 days and counting with absolutely no humanitarian aid getting into Gaza. Nothing. No food, no water, no medicine, no fuel, for over a month. That is a clear violation of the Geneva convention, the Foreign Assistance Act, and basic human decency. It is a war crime. You don’t starve children. We are deeply complicit in all of this death and suffering.”
Even Trump, Meyers noted, acknowledged the brutal conditions when asked if he agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that there’s “no starvation in Gaza.” Trump responded, “I don’t know. I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry. Some of those kids are—that’s real starvation stuff. I see it. And you can’t fake that.”
Meyers closed with a stark message: “If even Trump is forced to acknowledge the reality of the crisis, that means it is long past time to act and end the suffering.”

When a comedian is breaking from jokes to address a humanitarian crisis- then it shows it’s time for the world to wake up and react with compassion. I was there live and saw the show – the audience was quite after his remarks and it took us a few minutes to regain a light hearted mood. He broke format for the benefit of the innocent humans being starved and killed.
