Seth Meyers is on a Mango kick. Days after a joke referencing Chris Kattan’s SNL character bombed on his show, the host has introduced a new YouTube outro that resurrects the character through the magic of visual effects.
Meyers first brought up the character on Late Night with Seth Meyers on April 30, responding to a clip of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick commenting on tariffs. “The only price [the tariff] would change would be a product that we don’t make here, like a mango,” Lutnick was heard saying.
“First of all, that’s totally unfair. We do make Mango here in America. It’s just the one we make, you can’t-a have-a,” Meyers quipped as a photo of Kattan’s character appeared.
“I always forget what year it is until a joke like that doesn’t work,” he ad-libbed when the joke fell flat.
But Meyers doubled down the very next day in a new episode of “Corrections.”
Acknowledging an inherent error in the previous night’s Mango joke, Meyers clarified that in the character’s canon, he comes not from America but from Mango Island. After that, Meyers requested a new YouTube outro video—something he regularly uses Corrections to do.
The final product of that effort is now viewable on Late Night’s latest YouTube uploads of A Closer Look.
“You can have-a da ‘Closer Look,’” Meyers says in the outro before being replaced by a superimposed image of Chris Kattan as Mango, who adds “But you can’t have-a da Mango.”

After debuting the character in 1997, Kattan reprised Mango a whopping fifteen more times on SNL through 2002.
If Meyers’ recent Mango remarks trigger any nostalgia, Kattan fans are in luck. As we recently reported, the character’s screen-worn shorts are now on the auction block, where they currently sit at a cool $500 bid.
I quote “you can’t have-a the mango” at least twice a year, sometimes more. I have kids and they love mango, so…
They have no idea why I say it. I have fun. 😔
