Trevor Noah is back doing the talk show thing, except now he’s on the opposite side of the desk. After hitting up several daytime shows over the past week, including Today, The View, and The Kelly Clarkson Show, Noah stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday for a late-night chat.
While Noah’s current publicity blitz is in support of his new children’s book, Into the Uncut Grass, he initially seemed more keen to talk about Kimmel’s ongoing—and increasingly ridiculous—feud with Donald Trump.
Almost before he had even sat down, the former Daily Show host thanked Kimmel, then explained to the audience that “Jimmy waited for me outside on the sidewalk [and] welcomed me in… that was special,” prompting Kimmel to reply that “I was hoping you’d flip me a shiny nickel on your way in.”
The two, of course, were poking fun at Trump’s latest insistence that—back before he got into politics and guested on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel himself would await The Apprentice host’s arrival outside his studio, then ask, “Oh sir, may I bring you in?” (Kimmel disputes the claim.)
Kimmel remarked on how strange a story it was for Trump to tell, then asked Noah if he would ever meet his guests before their appearances on The Daily Show. Noah said that he did, “But not in the streets.” Though he does think it would “be a fun thing to do”—mostly for the shock value.
“Imagine you coming to Jimmy Kimmel. And then, in the street, you see a man who looks like Jimmy Kimmel, waving at you in your car. You should do that,” Noah suggested.
“It would be like if you went to Disneyland and you entered the parking lot and Mickey was working the booth,” Kimmel replied.
Though Kimmel informed Noah that Trump had some not-so-nice things to say about him, the comedian admitted that he didn’t really keep up with that kind of stuff. He did, however, seem sort of impressed that Kimmel has an actual “feud” with the former president—and suggested that the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host could possibly make the world a better place if he just squashed his beef with Trump.
“You realize you could rekindle the friendship and change this country,” Noah stated.
“Oh, yeah,” Kimmel replied. “I don’t think it would change the country. I know I could rekindle the friendship with one compliment. That would be all it takes. And that’s why he’s such a terrible choice for president. Because you can turn him around with a simple comment.”
Still, Noah is convinced that a simple hug is all Trump needs from Kimmel. “One hug, Jimmy… You just go in there, one hug, you change the world.”
On the topic of Trump, Kimmel was curious about how Noah was feeling since leaving The Daily Show behind—especially given the current (chaotic) news cycle. “Are you experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety, hopelessness?,” Kimmel asked. While Noah insisted that he’s “good,” he admitted that he does indeed sometimes “miss the vibe. Days like today, obviously, you watch Trump at a rally and he’s dancing for 40 minutes. I miss that. Because that’s just free content.”
Noah explained that he’s keeping himself busy by traveling more, being on the road, and writing his new children’s book, which is in bookstores now.
Tuesday’s appearance marked Noah’s third appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He sat down for the first time in 2015, his first year as host of The Daily Show, then guested a second time in 2019. You can watch their full interview below.
Trevor Noah’s book ‘Into the Uncut Grass’ is a total waste of money. I am living in Okinawa Japan and teach English. I ordered the book after seeing Kimmel praise it…but I do not think that writer Noah nor Kimmel understand anything about children’s books. First of all, the pictures were terrible. The text of the book was such that a parent would have to explain it all. In addition, so much page was spent on two snails and later coins…both of which could talk…coins that talked? Even my three year old questioned that.
The book is a waste of money….I am so disappointed in my purchase of this book that I will never ever get suckered into this again. Shame on all of you!
