Harry Styles Meets His ‘Understudy’ in New SNL Promo

In the first promo for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, Harry Styles is puzzled to find a cast member ready to take his place as host and musical guest.

This Saturday, March 15, marks the British musician’s seventh overall SNL appearance. He first pulled double duty on the long-running comedy series in November 2019. That night, his sketch appearances found him playing an overeager office intern, half of an expectant Icelandic couple, the misguided social media manager for Sara Lee, a potty-mouthed airline pilot, and a hype DJ at… a funeral.

Styles’ other previous SNL visits include three musical guest turns with One Direction, one as a solo musical guest (in April 2017), and a cameo in a presidential debate–spoofing cold open in October 2020.

Most recently, Styles turned up in the Studio 8H audience this past weekend, effectively stealing the spotlight from monologuing host Ryan Gosling.

After Gosling sang a few bars of Styles’ hit “Sign of the Times”—featured in promos for the four-time host’s upcoming film Project Hail Mary—he was joined on stage by “most of the cast.” They hadn’t gathered at home base because Gosling is “their favorite host of all time,” but, as Kenan Thompson admitted, “to get a better look at Harry.”

In the promo above, what appears to be Styles preparing on stage for his latest round of SNL duties turns out to be Marcello Hernández. Styles is surprised to see the self-professed “understudy,” in part because Hernández has apparently raided his wardrobe, but primarily because Styles himself is perfectly fine. He merely ran late because, as he explains, he and Kenan Thompson were making a pain au chocolat run.
