Aidy Bryant Returns to SNL for ‘Trend Forecasters’ Encore With Bowen Yang

Aidy Bryant was “in!” again at SNL as Bowen Yang headed “out!” the door.

Bryant, who parted ways with Saturday Night Live at the end of Season 47, returned to the NBC sketch comedy series this weekend to join exiting cast member Bowen Yang for an encore of their “Weekend Update” trend forecasters.

Bryant and Yang last teamed up to play the “Update” twosome in SNL‘s Season 47 finale, which marked Bryant’s own swan song. Back then in their third appearance, the trend forecasters declared, among other things, that grapes with seeds were “in!,” whereas the navel orange was “out!” (“Ew, why do you have belly button? You are fruit!” sneered Yang’s character.)

This time around, the Trend Forecasters first tackled holiday trends, saying that “fighting with your family” is “in,” as are Bombas (“Evvvvvverybody’s getting socks from Bomba!”).

Mistletoe, however, is “out. (“A plant that makes you kiss? There’s already one of those and it’s called marijuana!”).

“I kiss when I get the urge, and uh-oh boy, I’m getting it right now,” cooed Bryant’s character, before giving Yang an applause-generating peck on the lips.

The Trend Forecasters next dove into singing trends, then wrapped things up by declaring “out” Orange Chicken (“We didn’t invent that!” crowed Yang’s character), “waving PRIDE flags, Marge Simpson hair, and…. Michael Che!”

Cut to a horrified Che next to them with a tall purple wig and a PRIDE flag in hand.

In the final years of her 10-season SNL run, Bryant moonlighted as the star of Hulu’s Shrill comedy, which ran for three seasons. Since leaving SNL three-and-a-half years ago, she has done voice work on series such as Big Mouth and Human Resources, recurred on Apple TV’s Platonic, and hosted the Independent Spirit Awards (twice).

It was reported in May 2023 that Bryant would headline Lonely Hearts Club, a new Peacock series about Martha Beck, the woman who killed unsuspecting victims with partner Raymond Fernandez. Its current status is unknown.
