Seth Meyers and John Oliver‘s weekend stand-up show took an unexpected turn when the audience Q&A delivered a request for the two to “kiss!”
Best of all, there’s audio of how the late night vets handled it.
Perhaps taking a page from a recent Saturday Night Live sketch, an audience member at Meyers and Oliver’s March 8 stand-up show implored them to kiss. Spoiler alert: they did not. But the request did prove to be good fodder for the two comics, who riffed on the request after recovering from their initial surprise.
The moment came during the audience Q&A segment of Meyers and Oliver’s monthly two-hander at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. According to audio of the moment captured by an X user, the demand after Meyers called on a crowd member from the balcony to ask a question.
“Kiss!” someone shouted, leaving the two hosts confused.
“That’s not a question, that’s a demand,” Oliver pointed out.
“You guys are doing A&Qs,” Meyers noted, “where you say something and then we have questions.”
While the request elicited woos and laughter from the crowd, Last Week Tonight host Oliver sounded exasperated. “What the f*ck are you talk—” he blurted, before Meyers jumped in.
“Guys, I’m gonna be honest: We’re off to a bad start,” the Late Night host observed.
“Yeah,” Oliver agreed. “Because if I may quote a wise man, ‘A cornerstone of democracy is that you don’t get to yell ‘kiss’ at two people and have them succumb to peer pressure.’”
Intentional or not, the Sunday-night “kiss!” command evoked a standout sketch from the previous night’s SNL, in which Gosling played a wedding attendee drunk on the power to make the newlyweds smooch when he clinks his glass.
While Meyer and Oliver may not be newlywed-level close, the two have become close collaborators. The comedy show in question is part of a monthly residency the pair have had going since January 2024. After extending the residency late last year, it’s currently set to run through at least this coming June.
