Seth Meyers’ Favorite SNL Character Won’t Surprise You One Bit

When it comes to iconic Saturday Night Live characters, Seth Meyers knows a thing or two. After all, before being tapped to host NBC’s Late Night, he was a cast member for 13 seasons and a head writer for eight.

So when he agreed to list his top 5 favorite SNL characters during an appearance on Sunday night’s Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, it caught our attention.

Coming in at #5 is Rachel Dratch‘s Debbie Downer. Meyers was at the show for all of Debbie Downer’s appearances on the show while Dratch was a regular cast member, so he may well have had a hand in some of those Debbie Downer sketches.

At #4 is Buckwheat, which Meyers concedes pre-existed SNL, although Eddie Murphy clearly took the character in its own direction.

Kate McKinnon‘s “Close Encounter” character Colleen Rafferty is Meyers’ third favorite SNL character. Meyers had already left the show when Rafferty made her SNL debut in 2015, so we’ll forgive him for getting the character’s name wrong as he recited it during Cohen’s speed round.

At #2, Meyers named Will Forte‘s MacGruber, who made nine appearances on the show during Meyers’ tenure and went on to star in his own movie and his own spinoff series.

And coming in at number one—because of course he did—is, as Meyers put it, “My one true love, Stefon.”

Portrayed by Bill Hader, and written by Hader and John Mulaney, Stefon made 18 appearances on the show, most of them as Weekend Update’s nightclub-savvy “City Correspondent” who also happened to have a huge crush on Meyers.

In his final regular appearance on the show, Stefon and Meyers were married. Meyers keeps a Matryoshka doll of Stefon on his desk at Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Seth was a performer/cast number for 14 years, starting in 2001, so he overlapped with Dratch for more than 1 season.

Quinn, Thank you for pointing this out. I was referencing his time as head writer on the show, but I can see how it would be confusing. Post updated!

I’m with Seth on these five. All brilliant characters. With Raffertu and Stefon, I still start to laugh before they start to speak.
