Sarah Sherman ‘Destroyed’ at Her Bat Mitzvah (Because of Course She Did)

Sarah Sherman a precocious tween? Whodathunkit.

More than 15 years before she stepped foot in Studio 8H, the Saturday Night Live star apparently put on quite the show for congregants at her local synagogue on New York’s Long Island.

“So my [bat mitzvah] theme was being hilarious,” Sherman told Stavros Halkias in a new episode of his Stavvy’s World podcast.

Asked if everyone had to sit on whoopee cushions, Sherman explained that “the invitations were snakes in a can that I delivered to their house… Except if you were old—we didn’t want to give anyone a heart attack, of course.”

The service itself was long, according to Sherman. So she decided she needed to liven things up.

“I just remember they go like, ‘The Sisterhood of Jerusalem would like to present you with these candlesticks, blah blah blah,'” Sherman recalled. Looking to get a rise out of the crowd, the young Sherman apparently responded sardonically, “Yeah, just what I always wanted.”

Sherman says her mom was up front gesturing her to cut it out, but the budding comic was thrilled with her delivery.

“I f*cking nailed it,” Sherman recalls. “Dude, I destroyed! I crushed!”

When Halkias asked if she’d been chasing that high ever since, Sherman copped to just that.

“Oh my god, a hundred billion percent,” Sherman said.

As for what she wore, Sherman explained it was from Betsey Johnson—the New York designer known for her whimsical designs.

“Dude, Betsey Johnson, head-to-f*cking toe. Shoes match the belt, little tiny Jew-fro, braces with the rubber bands matching my motherf*cking dress,” Sherman shared.

After the service, her bat mitzvah party featured karaoke, at which Sherman sang “Roxanne” by The Police.

“‘Cause I was like, ‘Dude, it’s about a prostitute—I’m so f*cking cool,'” Sherman said. “I rocked it.”

Hahaha my batmitzvah was absolutely nowhere near as lit, although I did put some jokes in my speech, which did not land.
