Programming Alert: Delayed Start for Tonight’s Last Week Tonight

Viewers anxiously awaiting John Oliver’s take on yet another jam-packed week of news out of Trump’s Washington will have to wait a bit longer tonight.

That’s because this week’s episode of Last Week Tonight will begin almost a half hour late, at 11:25pm.

The show is being pushed back by tonight’s Season 4 premiere of The Righteous Gemstones. The half hour comedy runs long tonight by neary 13 minutes, and will be repeated immediately after its premiere.  Coming as it does at the end of HBO’s Sunday night slate of original series, it’s not uncommon for Last Week Tonight to be delayed by a few minutes when earlier shows run long, although tonight’s 25-minute delay is an unusually long one.

Between Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of congress last week, his on-again-off-again tariffs on Mexico and Canada, his “last warning to Hamas,” and reports of a cabinet meeting blow-up between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Elon Musk, Oliver should have plenty to talk about at the top of tonight’s show.

The show is nearing the end of its first stretch of Season 12 episodes. It’s scheduled to air another new episode March 22nd before taking a one-week break.

Since its debut in 2014, Oliver and team have won 30 Emmy awards, including every writing and series Emmy that they’ve been nominated for. In December 2023, the series was renewed for three additional seasons, through 2026.
