Saturday Night Live briefly had a couple of unexpected guest writers on its staff this week. Two pigeons crashed the Please Don’t Destroy office.
Earlier today, the sketch group—comprised of writers Ben Marshall, Martin Herlihy, and John Higgins—posted a video of their “new coworkers” to Instagram.
With a new season set to kick off on Saturday, the staff is returning from the show’s summer break this week. But in a scene reminiscent of a cross between a Please Don’t Destroy sketch and SNL‘s take on The Birds, that return apparently got off to a rocky start.
The video shows Higgins and Marshall struggling to shoo two birds out of their 30 Rockefeller Plaza office, after they presumably entered through an open window. The job of getting them out eventually falls to what appears to be a member of NBC’s security or building personnel.
“Should I close this door so they don’t get out?” Higgins asks him.
“You’re gonna leave me in here with them?” the man replies incredulously.
PDD also shared screenshots of text message reactions from their SNL colleagues. (Writer Jake Nordwind astutely noted the birds needed to add a red-feathered third to properly resemble the trio.) Others noted that an even number of birds is a good omen for the year to come at SNL.
While the NBC employee tasked with removing the birds eventually got them out of the window, the ordeal wasn’t quite over for the PDD boys.
“They shit on your sofa,” he told Higgins. “They were nervous.”
It’s unclear if the writers consulted Flaco the Owl’s widow on how to safely take flight from a building. In any case, one could argue the heroic NBC employee deserves a shoutout on SNL’s season premiere, set for this Saturday night.
