Nick Offerman returned to The Daily Show Wednesday night for a new installment of the show’s “In My Opinion” segment, in which he called on President Trump to make good on his promises to support American farmers.
Though he’s best known as a comic actor, Offerman also owns a certified organic farm in Maryland and is a longtime advocate for regenerative agriculture. He opened the segment with typical deadpan charm: “Farmers aren’t just guys mowing down their cornfield to build a baseball field for ghosts. They’re also a vital part of America’s economy and national identity.”
After playing a series of clips of Trump expressing his love for farmers and farming, ending with Trump saying somewhat suggestively, “I love cows,” the audience cackled, prompting Offerman to scold them. “Come on. Love is love,” he said, adding, “I’ve seen that guy dance. I bet he knows his way around an udder.”
From there, Offerman lamented the decline of small farms and blasted an agricultural system “engineered to make more profit than nutrition.” “We’re not growing food,” he said. “We’re growing ingredients—to turn them into whatever the [BLEEP] a Dorito is.”
He went on to contrast America’s industrial agriculture with Europe’s smaller, organic farms—“like their bathing suits, much smaller so you can see every detail of their meat and veg”—and urged Trump to support policies that actually help working farmers.
The segment marked Offerman’s second appearance on The Daily Show‘s “In My Opinion”series that has also featured commentary from Charlamagne tha God, Leslie Jones, and John Leguizamo. His previous segment, a plea to protect national parks, recently earned The Daily Show an Environmental Media Award.
