John Oliver wants to make the “America the Beautiful” national parks pass beautiful again.
At the close of this week’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the HBO series’ host recounted President Donald Trump‘s unchecked penchant for “branding”—be it the rechristened The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, or the recent announcement that Trump’s signature will now appear on paper U.S. currency (unprecedented for a sitting commander-in-chief).
Oliver can’t do much about those instances of Trump branding, but he does have a fix for one that has flown relatively under the radar.
Back in December, it was quietly announced that Trump’s face would appear on the National Park Service’s annual pass for 2026, alongside a portrait of premiere POTUS George Washington.
This, despite the fact that Federal Law dictates that the annual pass feature the winner of the National Parks Foundation’s annual public lands photo contest.
This, despite the fact that Trump has been no friend of the National Park Service.
Trump’s White House, for example, has lobbied to open National Parks to oil drilling, road-building and other development. It also has laid off 24% of the Park Service’s permanent staff.
Individuals have endeavored to offer a fix for the perceived affront, in the form of stickers that cover most or all of the pass’ front with one beautiful, natural vista or another.
Others, in the wake of the Department of the Interior stating that such stickers could trigger “Void if Altered” rules, have designed plastic sleeves that precisely cover the Washington-Trump duo.
John Oliver meanwhile has launched a website from which people can download/print free stickers that either cover Trump’s face—with, for example, the aforementioned photo contest’s runner-up photo of a tongue-wagging bear, or “a cool lizard”—or adorn plastic sleeves with a “vista,” including Last Week Tonight mascot Marshmallow the Polar Bear with a Broken Penis during his sojourn to Alaska.
The URL for said parks pass cover-ups? A fitting if ribald JohnOliverGivesTrumpHeads.com.
