Malala Helps Push Fallon to 100 Million TikTok Views

Of all the people to help Jimmy Fallon land another 100-million-view TikTok hit, few would have guessed Malala Yousafzai. But the education activist’s unexpected turn in a “Beez in the Trap” trend video has pushed The Tonight Show to its latest viral milestone.

It’s only the second time a video from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has hit 100 million views on TikTok. Fallon’s collaboration with Yousafzai took three-and-a-half weeks to reach the milestone; the web-exclusive clip was recorded when she guested on the show on October 20.

The trend itself—two back-to-back people lip-syncing a mashup of 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” and Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap”—has been spreading across TikTok and Instagram Reels since August. Fallon’s version, captioned “What’s going on, @Malala Yousafzai?!,” has racked up 13.4 million likes, 40k comments, and 515k saves on TikTok alone. It has added another 10.9 million views on Instagram but only about 120k on YouTube.

As the clip took off, Yousafzai joined in the fun, posting a TikTok of her own documenting her rehearsal—including her decision to censor one particular profanity. That video has drawn nearly 7 million views itself.

Not all of the attention has been celebratory, with some viewers criticized Fallon for roping a figure like Yousafzai into a TikTok trend. Mostly, though, audiences have simply been stunned by the pairing. “You will literally never guess who is behind him,” one user wrote in an X post that drew 348k likes and 19k reposts.

Fallon and Yousafzai’s “Beez in the Trap” clip now sits as the second most-viewed TikTok in the show’s history, trailing only last year’s Wicked Beat Bit. (That clip currently stands at 124 million views.) Fallon aired a sequel to that bit earlier this week to kick off The Tonight Show‘s Wicked: For Good Week, which continues tonight with guest Cynthia Erivo.
