Several late-night shows returned after the Memorial Day break with all new episodes, resulting in substantial week-to-week audience growth, and first place finishes for CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Per Nielsen live-plus-three data, Jimmy Kimmel Live! averaged the most P18-49 viewers on all of late-night (294,000) for the week beginning June 3, 2024. Kimmel also averaged 1,969,000 total viewers, a close second in the 11:35 p.m. slot behind The Late Show. ABC’s Nightline was the No. 1 program in its timeslot for the week of June 3, both in total viewers (964,000) and among P18-49 (154,000).
Relative to the week before (which started on Memorial Day), Kimmel gained +12% in total viewers and +41% in P18-49. Nightline gained +8% in total viewers and +25% in P18-49. Jimmy Kimmel Live! aired four new episodes last week (Monday, June 3-Thursday, June 6), and a repeat on Friday, June 7. The program aired three new episodes the week prior. Nightline, on the other hand, aired new episodes on all five days last week. The program aired four new episodes the week before, and did not report Memorial Day viewership data to Nielsen.
ABC’s late-night programming — specifically Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Nightline — benefited greatly from the network’s NBA Finals Game 1 broadcast this past Thursday. Per Nielsen live-plus-three data, Kimmel, which has the Finals as its direct lead-in, averaged a late night-high 2,662,000 total viewers and 575,000 P18-49 on Thursday, June 6. Nightline averaged 1,278,000 total viewers and 304,000 P18-49 on that date; far more viewers for both than normal.
CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert averaged 2,195,000 total viewers with 244,000 P18-49 viewers for the week of June 3, per Nielsen live-plus-three data. That’s +72% in total viewers and +39% in P18-49 viewers compared with the week prior. The Late Show aired new episodes on Monday-Thursday of last week, and a repeat on Friday. It exclusively aired old episodes the week before.
NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon averaged 1,255,000 total viewers and 183,000 P18-49 for the week of June 3, per Nielsen live-plus-three data. That’s +8% and +18%, respectively, from the week prior. The Tonight Show aired four new episodes last week (Monday-Thursday) and a repeat on Friday. The show exclusively aired repeats the week prior.
Following The Tonight Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers returned with new episodes on Monday-Thursday of last week, and a repeat on Friday. Per Nielsen live-plus-same-three data, the program’s five telecasts averaged 875,000 total viewers and 123,000 P18-49 for the week of June 3. That’s +29% in total viewers and +13% in P18-49 viewers from the week prior, when Late Night exclusively aired repeats.
Following Colbert, CBS aired new episodes of After Midnight on Monday through Thursday of last week, and a repeat on Friday. The show’s five telecasts averaged 637,000 total viewers and 128,000 P18-49 viewers for the week of June 3, per Nielsen live-plus-three data. That’s +20% in total viewers and +16% in P18-49 viewers from the week prior, when the show exclusively aired repeats.
Lastly, per Nielsen live-plus-three data, The Daily Show averaged 923,000 total viewers with 159,000 P18-49 for the week of June 3. The Daily Show did not air during the week starting May 27. Relative to the week of May 20, 2024, the program gained +2% in total viewers, but shed -12% in P18-49.
