Jimmy Kimmel is backing Stephen Colbert in the most Hollywood way possible: with a billboard.
The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host is using an Emmys FYC promo for his show at a major West Hollywood intersection to campaign for Stephen Colbert. At first glance, the billboard—posted at Santa Monica Boulevard and La Cienega—looks like a standard Emmy ad for Jimmy Kimmel Live. Except beside Kimmel’s photo, it reads: “I’m voting for Stephen.”
Kimmel’s billboard comes amid a wave of support for Colbert following CBS’s decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after the upcoming season, citing financial losses.
The move has sparked a backlash within the entertainment industry and beyond, with many questioning CBS’s timing and motives. As we’ve reported, the announcement came just weeks after the network’s parent company, Paramount, paid a $16 million settlement in its 60 Minutes case with Donald Trump—and just days before Trump’s FCC approved the Paramount–Skydance merger. Trump quickly celebrated Colbert’s cancellation, while FCC Chair Brendan Carr waved off critics as “losing a DNC spokesperson.”
Kimmel was one of the first to respond. Hours after the news broke, he posted a blunt two-part message to Instagram: “Love you Stephen. F*ck you CBS and all your Sheldons.”
In the days and weeks since, a parade of stars and polticos have shown up for Colbert. His first episode back featured surprise cameos from Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon—all taped earlier that day at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
Colbert, Kimmel, and The Daily Show are all nominated for Outstanding Talk Series at this year’s Emmys. Prior to Colbert’s cancellation, The Daily Show—which has won the category the past two years—was widely considered the frontrunner. But with all eyes on Colbert and a high-profile show of support from fellow nominee Kimmel, The Late Show could now be poised for an upset win in September.
Jimmy Kimmel has missed out on way too many promotional opportunities being on vacation. He is probably over it anyway.
I don’t think he GAF!
In a world of often cantankerous or negative hosts, Kimmel stands tall as One Of The Good Guys. Over and over, he shows us his generous and kind side while not sparing the buffoonery and worse of incompetent nasty liars occupying and abusing the seats of power.
Live long and prosper!
