Jimmy Fallon made an unusually covert entrance on Tuesday’s Tonight Show, emerging from a catering cart in a spoof of newly reported details about Donald Trump’s secret plane swap in Turkey last month.
Following the show’s opening credits, announcer Steve Higgins delivered his usual introduction for Fallon—but the host was nowhere to be seen.
Instead, two men in dark suits and sunglasses wheeled a large catering cart onto the stage and opened its doors to reveal Fallon crouched inside, clutching a McDonald’s bag and a supersized soda.
The sight gag was a riff on reports Tuesday that Trump was secretly transported in a catering truck at Ankara airport on July 8 after publicly boarding Air Force One. The maneuver was part of an effort to conceal a plane swap amid what U.S. officials described as a credible Iranian threat against the president’s aircraft.
Fallon wasn’t done with the story after his entrance. He devoted roughly three minutes of his monologue to the catering-truck episode.
“With everything going on in the world, Trump was like, ‘Just leave me in here, okay?’” Fallon joked. “‘Just leave me in—let me know when the war is over.’”
“Today, everyone was like, ‘Well, at least he has one exit plan,’” he added.
Fallon wasn’t the only late-night host to seize on the story Tuesday night. Over on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, guest host Anthony Anderson noted that if he were trying to find Trump, “a catering truck is the first place I’d look.”
“Next time,” Anderson suggested, “hide his ass in a bookmobile.”
