Jimmy Fallon Pranks Marcus Mumford With Two-Minute-Long Introduction

In what’s now officially a running gag, Jimmy Fallon surprised Marcus Mumford with a supersized introduction on Thursday’s The Tonight Show.

The bit dates back to March of last year, when Mumford appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show and ribbed Fallon over the intro he’d given Mumford & Sons at SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert.

“I was like, ‘Oh Jimmy’s going to introduce us. This is really sweet,’” Mumford recalled thinking. “He’ll probably go into our history, or talk about how many times we’ve played SNL, or mention that we’re the only British artist playing that night….”

Instead, Fallon simply said: “Ladies and gentlemen, Mumford & Sons.” (He later insisted he had “a whole big thing” prepared, but the show’s producers nixed it.)

When the band returned to perform later in that episode, Fallon overcorrected—delivering the longest musical guest introduction in late-night history, clocking in at nearly three-and-a-half minutes.

Neither Mumford nor Mumford & Sons were scheduled to appear on Thursday’s Tonight Show, though the band will serve as SNL’s musical guest this weekend. Still, while teeing up a “Rock & Roll Minute” segment, Fallon gestured toward Marcus waiting in the wings—and proceeded to identify him with a detailed, two-minute biography.

Fallon began with Mumford’s “humble beginnings” as a young boy in London, traced his music career from meeting Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane to the formation of Mumford & Sons, and wrapped with a plug for their upcoming SNL appearance.

Mumford grinned and shook his head as Fallon went on and on—at one point even sitting down on the stage mid-introduction. When it was finally over, Mumford responded, with exaggerated air quotes, “Thanks. Jimmy.” He then attempted to begin reading this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees, only to be comedically cut off mid-sentence.

As Mumford shuffled back into the shadows, laughing, Fallon told the audience that—just like in March 2025—the singer had no idea the joke was coming.
