First on LateNighter: U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has cancelled her planned Tuesday appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
A Treasury Department official tells us that Yellen is home with a rebound case of Covid, after first testing positive for the virus weeks ago. She had been back on her feet doing public events last week.
“Secretary Yellen tested positive for a rebound case of Covid-19 after experiencing mild symptoms,” Lily Adams, Treasury’s assistant secretary for public affairs, said in a statement. “She is working from home and will continue to do so until she can return to the office.”
Yellen’s sitdown with Colbert would have been her second visit to The Late Show. She previously guested on the show in 2022.
In a Wall Street Journal op-ed published Sunday, Yellen tacitly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the coming presidential election, warning that “veering off course” could inflict significant damage on the economy. She was expected to echo that sentiment in her conversation with Colbert.
In place of Yellen’s appearance, CBS announced Monday that The Late Show will air a new installment of “The Colbert Questionnaire” with guest Jude Law.
Colbert is in no shortage of political big names this week. As we’ve previously reported, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to guest on Colbert’s Late Show tonight, marking his first-ever appearance on a U.S. late-night talk show. The Canadian leader is in New York this week participating in the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the Summit of the Future.
