Things are heating up in the race for Outstanding Talk Series at this year’s Emmys.
Hot Ones, the popular YouTube interview series hosted by Sean Evans, will be competing in the category after a successful petition to join the race—putting the long-running and oft-viral show up against some of the biggest names in late night.
In Hot Ones, Evans interviews celebrity guests while they attempt to eat chicken wings basted in increasingly intense hot sauces.
Recent guests on the show have included Sydney Sweeney, Ice Spice, and Conan O’Brien, whose appearance went viral.
The usual competitors in the Outstanding Talk Series category, which is a part of the Primetime Emmy Awards, are TV’s major late-night shows, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The most recent winner in the category was Trevor Noah’s Daily Show.
Hot Ones was previously nominated in categories at the Daytime Emmy Awards. In 2021, Evans nabbed a nomination for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host. A year later, the show itself was nominated for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show. This latest change marks the first time Hot Ones has had a shot at any Primetime Emmy.
Produced by Complex Media and its former subsidiary First We Feast, Hot Ones premiered in 2015, and has put out 326 regular episodes to date. The show has also produced multiple spinoff TV shows.
Sean Evans is no stranger to his new Emmy competition. He’s been interviewed on The Tonight Show and The Late Show—and Jimmy Kimmel, James Corden, Stephen Colbert, and Andy Cohen have all been guests on Hot Ones.
This year’s Emmy nominations will be announced July 17, 2024. The 76th Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled for September 15th.
