Ego Nwodim’s workload at NBC will be a bit lighter going forward. The network has cancelled the Saturday Night Live star’s Peacock show, Mr. Throwback.
Nwodim co-starred on Mr Throwback alongside Adam Pally and NBA star Stephen Curry, whose fictionalized real-life self was the focal point of the show. Nwodim portrayed Kimberly Gregg, Curry’s childhood friend turned professional partner. (The role was based on Curry’s real-life COO, Tiffany Williams.)
The show’s entire six-episode first season was released at once in August on Peacock. A month later, NBC gave the pilot episode a proper television broadcast, airing it in its once-renowned Thursday night primetime comedy lineup. That broadcast pulled in 1.67 million viewers per Neilsen live-plus-same-day ratings.
Variety was first to report that the show did not receive a second-season pickup. Mr. Throwback‘s cancellation was revealed alongside news that another Peacock series, the Kaley Cuoco-Chris Messina comedy Based on a True Story has also been axed after a two-season run on the streamer.
Production of original shows on streaming has slowed considerably in recent years, with Peacock now boasting only a handful of multi-season series. The streamer currently has only only two original comedies scheduled to return this year: Poker Face and Twisted Metal. The series adaptation of Ted wasrenewed for a second season in mid-2024, but a release date has yet to be announced.
Nwodim is finishing her seventh season at Saturday Night Live as Season 50 enters its final three-episode stretch. She has not publically indicated her plans for next season.
Nwodim’s other recent TV work outside of SNL includes voice parts in Netflix’s animated Good Times reboot and a guest appearance on Poker Face.
