CNN Plans New Doc, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not

Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary celebrations may be over, but the documentaries keep coming.

Chevy Chase will be the subject of a new documentary from CNN Films, “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.” Named for his iconic introductory line as host of SNL’s Weekend Update, the film will dissect Chase’s rise to fame during the show’s landmark first season and the ups and downs of the career that followed.

“I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not” will be directed by documentary filmmaker Marina Zenovich. Zenovich has experience chronicling comedy legends, having directed Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic and Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind.

“I’ve always loved Chevy’s comedy and have been curious as to what makes him tick. That’s what I’m hoping to find out with this film,” Zenovich said in the release.

The project boasts Chase’s direct involvement, with CNN describing it as “authorized yet unfiltered.” For his part, Chase played coy in his own statement. “I understand CNN is going to release a documentary about me. I’m delighted and I hope I’m in it,” Chase said.

Chase was Saturday Night Live‘s first breakout star, leading to his departure just weeks into its second season. His role as a founding cast member of SNL has put a spotlight on the actor this year as the sketch show celebrated its 50th anniversary. He was also depicted in Jason Reitman’s SNL biopic Saturday Night.

Now, with I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, Chase joins becomes the third inaugural Not Ready for Primetime Player to receive the feature documentary treatment. Gilda Radner was the subject of the 2018 film Love, Gilda, while the life of John Belushi was explored in 2020’s Belushi.

The new doc is the latest comedy-related project to come out of the news network. In recent years, CNN has produced documentary series like The Story of Late Night, History of the Sitcom, and The History of Comedy, as well as its own original comedy panel show, Have I Got News For You.

I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not is expected sometime in 2026.
