Add Bill Maher to Jimmy Kimmel’s long list of late-night supporters.
The HBO host opened Friday night’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher with a monologue devoted to Kimmel’s ABC suspension that drew a direct line back to the controversy that cost Maher his own ABC platform two decades earlier.
Noting that Kimmel was taken off the air following his remarks about Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin, Maher added “It was 24 years to the day that I made comments on ABC that got me cancelled from that network.”
Maher said he disagreed with Kimmel’s characterization of the shooter’s politics, but emphasized that the ABC host had “every right to be wrong.” He framed the matter as a free speech issue, stressing that the First Amendment protects the right to express unpopular views.
Maher would know. On Sept. 17, 2001, he returned to ABC’s Politically Incorrect after the September 11 attacks and got into hot water himself when agreed with guest Dinesh D’Souza’s objection to President George W. Bush calling the terrorists ‘cowards,’ and added that the United States had been ‘the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away,’ noting that staying in a plane to crash it was ‘not cowardly.’
Maher’s remarks that night drew criticism from conservative commentators and led to calls for advertiser boycotts. Maher apologized but the controversy persisted. In May 2002, ABC announced it was canceling Politically Incorrect as part of a move toward “straight entertainment programming” in late night.
As it happens, it was that decision that cleared the way for Jimmy Kimmel Live‘s debut in January 2003. Real Time with Bill Maher launched on HBO the following month.
On Friday, Maher closed by suggesting that Kimmel, like him, could rebound if ABC’s suspension sticks. “If this firing goes for you the way it did for me, you’ll get 23 years on a better network,” he said.
