Andy Cohen Apologizes For Princess Kate Speculation

Add Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen to the list of hosts expressing regret for joking about Kate Middleton in the weeks leading up to her cancer announcement.

Cohen, who was on vacation last week, addressed Middleton at the start of his SiriusXM show Andy Cohen Live on Monday, saying “I am heartbroken by the news about Princess Kate, and I think someone on Sky News called me a ‘numpty’ during that whole conversation and they were right.”

He continued, “I wish I had kept my mouth shut and we are all praying for Princess Kate and King Charles.”

Like many in his position, Cohen had gleefully speculated about Kate’s disappearance from the public eye on his shows and on social media.

As Middleton revealed in a video message ten days ago, she has been battling cancer that was discovered during abdominal surgery. She is currently undergoing preventative chemotherapy.

Cohen’s apology comes a week to the day that Stephen Colbert expressed his own regrets for jokes he made on The Late Show before Princess Kate’s announcement.

“For the last six weeks to two months, everybody has been talking about the mystery of Kate Middleton’s disappearance from public life. And two weeks ago, we did some jokes about that mystery and all the attendant fru-fra in the reporting about that,” explained Colbert.

“When I made those jokes, that upset some people… even before her diagnosis was revealed, and I can understand that. A lot of my jokes have upset people in the past, and I’m sure some of my jokes will upset people in the future. But there’s a standard that I try to hold myself to, and that is I do not make light of somebody else’s tragedy.”
