Hosting Saturday Night Live this week, Amy Poehler brought an old friend along for the ride: Tina Fey. Her longtime comedy partner joined her in the cold open, playing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem opposite Poehler’s fiery Pam Bondi.
The sketch, a send-up of Pam Bondi’s testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week, opened with Poehler’s Bondi sparring with Democratic senators and refusing to answer questions about President Trump’s Justice Department. “My name is Pam Bondi,” she declared. “I spell it with an I because I ain’t going to answer any of your questions.”
What followed was a blistering mix of roast-style put-downs and political absurdity, with Poehler targeting senators by name: “Senator Blumenthal, look at this honky. Even people in Connecticut go, damn, that guy is white as hell,” and later, “Amy Klobuchar, your ass out here sounding like a Pokémon.”
Just when it seemed things couldn’t get more chaotic, Fey made her entrance. “That’s right. It’s me, Kristi Noem. I spell my name with an I because that’s how I thought it was spelt—and I’m the rarest type of person in Washington, D.C., a brunette that Donald Trump listens to.”
Fey’s Noem defended I.C.E. with an over-the-top recruitment ad (“Do you take supplements you bought at the gas station daily? Then buckle up, slap on some Oakleys, wig boy — welcome to I.C.E.”).
Poehler and Fey, who first met in 1993 at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic, co-anchored Weekend Update from 2004 to 2006. They returned to the fake news desk tonight, alongside Poehler’s second co-anchor, Seth Meyers, challenging Colin Jost and Michael Che to a “Weekend Update Joke Off.”
