Thursday Night Football Gets Its Own Mini Late-Night Show With Matt Friend

Thursday night brought the latest crossover between late-night comedy and live sports, as comedian and impressionist Matt Friend debuted “The Friend Zone” on Prime Video’s TNF Nightcap.

The new recurring comedy segment might best be described as a sports-themed mini late-night show tucked inside the streamer’s post-Thursday Night Football coverage.

Friend got roughly eight and a half minutes to work following the Patriots-Bears game, packing the segment with topical jokes and a rapid-fire assortment of celebrity impressions.

“Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football combines the excitement of watching an NFL game with the thrill of trying to remember your ex’s login info,” Friend joked early on.

From there, he cycled through impressions of Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Howard Stern, RFK Jr., King Charles, Bernie Sanders, Stanley Tucci, Jeff Goldblum, Andy Cohen, Bill Maher, Jennifer Coolidge, and others. He also worked Amazon’s TNF broadcast team into his act, including an Al Michaels joke built around the 81-year-old broadcaster working on a streaming platform.

Prime Video announced The Friend Zone earlier Thursday, billing Friend as a recurring TNF Nightcap contributor who will “bring the spirit of late-night comedy to Thursday nights” with original sketches, celebrity impressions, and his comedic take on sports and entertainment.

It isn’t Nightcap’s first foray into comedy. Nikki Glaser made five appearances on the postgame show in 2024 following her breakout performance on Netflix’s The Roast of Tom Brady.

Friend’s debut arrives at a particularly busy moment for the marriage of late night and sports. Earlier this week, Prime Video also unveiled The Stepback with Blake Griffin. Fox got into the act over the summer with the James Corden-hosted FIFA World Cup After Hours, while ESPN aired They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce in early 2025.

NBC, meanwhile, has scheduled four special post-Sunday Night Football editions of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this fall, while Jimmy Kimmel Live! has repeatedly scored some of its biggest audiences on Mondays following Monday Night Football.

Friend’s night didn’t end when The Friend Zone did. He joined the Nightcap crew at the desk afterward, where he talked about learning impressions as a kid and studying comedians including Johnny Carson, Eddie Murphy, Don Rickles, and Richard Pryor.

“We’re so divided as a country,” Friend said. “And football brings us all together, and I’m happy to hopefully do some comedy that everybody can laugh at.”
