SNL Pulled a Dress-Rehearsal Fake-Out to Hide Taylor Swift’s Cameo

First on LateNighter: Saturday Night Live managed to keep Taylor Swift’s surprise appearance in Dakota Johnson’s monologue under wraps until the moment she walked onstage—and apparently went to some lengths to do it.

Swift was not part of Saturday night’s dress rehearsal. Instead, cast member Sarah Sherman stepped in to play the role of Johnson’s very supportive friend.

That changed when the show went live.

During the monologue, Johnson joked about her recent history of dating musicians before assuring the audience that her friends don’t judge her choices.

“They’re actually really supportive,” Johnson said, setting up Swift’s unannounced entrance.

“Ladies and gentlemen, my literal therapist,” Johnson said as Swift appeared at her side.

Swift then explained that she is very much not Johnson’s therapist—Johnson simply shows up at her house with an empty bottle of wine, flops on her couch, and overshares while Swift occasionally responds, “Damn, that’s crazy.”

“Is that not a therapist?” Johnson asked.

Johnson and Sherman delivered the same exchange at dress, with no indication to the audience that Swift would take over Sherman’s part when the show went live. The switch kept the pop superstar’s appearance secret from the hundreds of audience members who saw the full rehearsal a few hours before airtime.

Saturday’s cameo was Swift’s first SNL appearance in three years. She last turned up during the Pete Davidson-hosted Season 49 premiere in October 2023, making a five-second appearance to introduce Ice Spice’s second performance.

The pop star has a long history with the show: four stints as musical guest, one episode pulling double duty as host and musical guest, and now three stand-alone cameos, in addition to an appearance on SNL’s 40th anniversary special.
