Jimmy Fallon kept viewers guessing until the final minutes of Tuesday night’s Tonight Show, when Phoebe Bridgers emerged as the program’s first-ever unannounced musical guest.
Bridgers performed “Lost Boys,” the lead single from her upcoming album Lost Weekend, backed by a nine-piece band made up entirely of children.
Fallon teased the appearance immediately after his monologue, announcing that the mystery artist would perform the worldwide television debut of a new single.
After attempting some characteristically fuzzy arithmetic about his combined runs on Late Night and The Tonight Show, Fallon noted that he had never welcomed a surprise musical guest during his 17 years hosting late-night television.
“In all the years, we’ve never done a surprise musical guest,” he said. “But tonight, we have one.”
Fallon offered viewers only one clue—or, more accurately, one elimination—after his announcer Steve Higgins asked whether the guest might be Mitch McConnell.
“It’s not Mitch McConnell,” Fallon replied. “I can guarantee you that.”

The actual reveal came at the end of the show, when Fallon introduced Bridgers for the worldwide television debut of “Lost Boys.” The singer performed alongside nine young musicians, giving the number a fitting visual connection to its title and Peter Pan-inspired lyrics.
“Lost Boys” marks Bridgers’ first solo release since the 2022 single “Sidelines” and previews her first solo album since 2020’s Punisher. The song was co-produced by Bridgers, Tony Berg, Ethan Gruska, Jack Antonoff and Alex G, with Bridgers’ Boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus among its additional vocalists.
Lost Weekend, Bridgers’ third solo studio album, is scheduled for release August 14 through Dead Oceans.
Bridgers previously performed “Sidelines” on The Tonight Show in June 2022. This time, Fallon made her appearance part performance, part late-night guessing game. Watch her full performance below:
