Lorne Documentary Heads to Peacock After Theatrical Run

Morgan Neville’s Lorne is making the move to streaming.

The documentary about Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels will debut on Peacock Friday, June 5, following its theatrical release by Focus Features in mid-April.

Directed and produced by Neville, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind 20 Feet from Stardom and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Lorne offers a career-spanning look at Michaels, from his early work in Canadian television through the creation of SNL, his brief departure from the show, the failure of The New Show, and his return to Studio 8H.

The film also spends time with Michaels in the present day, incorporating newly shot and archival behind-the-scenes footage from Saturday Night Live, along with interviews from a long list of SNL veterans, hosts, writers, and Michaels-world regulars. Among those appearing are Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Conan O’Brien, John Mulaney, Maya Rudolph, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Kenan Thompson, Bowen Yang, Michael Che, Colin Jost, Dana Carvey, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Candice Bergen, and Paul Simon.

The documentary also includes behind-the-scenes footage from episodes hosted by Timothée Chalamet, Kate McKinnon, Ayo Edebiri, Shane Gillis, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone. Chris Parnell narrates the film, while Robert Smigel contributed new TV Funhouse shorts to help bridge parts of the story.

Lorne’s move to Peacock is an apropos one. The streamer is already home to episodes from across Saturday Night Live’s 51-year run, along with a growing shelf of documentary projects about the institution Michaels built—including the four-part docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night (also produced by Neville) and the more recently released Downey Wrote That!, about legendary SNL writer Jim Downey.
