WATCH: Shane Gillis Workshops His SNL Monologue in New Promo

Say what you want about Shane Gillis, the man is an ace impressionist… of horses.

In a just-posted promo for his Saturday Night Live hosting debut, the comedian is seen faux-workshopping a series of hackneyed monologue jokes while a supportive Marcello Hernandez and Sarah Sherman look on.

Among his zingers: “I went to an Amish wedding once — I was the only one who could do the electric slide” and “New Planet of the Apes is coming out — it’s gonna be bananas.”

After asking the (pretend) crowd if they like impressions, he procedes to imitate a horse.

The promo marks the first time viewers have seen Gillis in Studio 8H. He was briefly a cast member on the show in 2019, but was fired before appearing on a single episode after past clips of him making racist and homophobic jokes surfaced online.

He’s since become a popular comedian in his own right, with comedy specials that have raked in millions of views on YouTube and Netflix. He’s also maintained a cordial relationship with at least some in the SNL family, appearing in Pete Davidson’s Lorne Michaels-produced Peacock comedy, Bupkis.

His return to the show doesn’t come without controversy. He apologized for his past statements in the wake of his SNL firing, but more recently he’s been accused of using his podcast to platform holocaust deniers, and of making antisemitic jokes himself.

Gillis will be joined on SNL this weekend by musical guest 21 Savage.
