Watch: Mary Katherine Gallagher Crashes Kamala Harris Speech

Citing FCC equal time rules, Lorne Michaels told us not to expect any cameos from either of the presidential candidates on Saturday Night Live ahead of Election Day.

But he didn’t say anything about SNL characters appearing off the show with presidental candidates.

That’s just what attendees at Thurday night’s Al Smith dinner in New York City got when Molly Shannon‘s Mary Katherine Gallagher crashed Kamala Harris‘ pre-taped message to the group.

“Hey, what’s going on?” Harris asks in the video after she spots Mary Katherine lurking behind her.

After greeting the vice president, Shannon as Gallagher explains that the Al Smith dinner is one of the biggest dinners for Catholics, “next to the last supper,” and that—you guessed it—”sometimes when I get nervous I stick my fingers under my arms, and I smell ’em. Like that.”

Engaging in a back-and-forth that one could easily imagine airing as part of in an episode of SNL, Gallagher and Harris made several not-so-subtle digs at Donald Trump (who sat on the dais at the dinner as the video played), with Shannon ending her two-minute guest spot as Gallagher with the requisite “Superstar!”

Molly Shannon first portrayed Mary Katherine Gallagher on Saturday Night Live just a month into her seven year stint on the NBC sketch series. Gallagher was Shannon’s first break-out SNL character, and she went on to appear on the show 20 times. She even starred in her own feature film, 1999’s Superstar.

Tonight’s appearance with Harris was the first time Shannon has dusted off the character’s Catholic school dress in nearly ten years. (She last appeared in a cameo on SNL‘s 40th anniversary special.)

Shannon’s appearance as Gallagher featured several of the character’s trademark moves—sticking her fingers under her arms, proclaiming “superstar,” and expressing her feelings in the form of a dramatic monologue from her favorite made-for-tv series: “House of Dragons, now streaming on HBO Max”

Appropriately, given the audience (which included New York’s archbishop and other high-ranking members of the Catholic church), Mary Katherine Gallagher did not flash her underwear.
