If this week’s promo is any indication, Jake Gyllenhaal is ready to take viewers on a strange trip when he returns for his third Saturday Night Live hosting gig.
The just-released clip shows Gyllenhaal rehearsing his lines for this weekend’s season finale alone in Studio 8H when he’s approached by Marcello Hernandez, who asks him to sign his SNL 2024 yearbook. Gyllenhaal obliges, but apparently takes his time finding the perfect words as a montage shows him cycling through tears, anger, epiphany, and eventual relief.
“Enjoy, papi,” Jake says as he returns the yearbook to Hernandez, who is asleep by this point.
The already off-the-wall promo ends by doubling down on the absurd, revealing the message Gyllenhaal just labored over. “B kewl!,” it reads, signed by “Jack.”
“You didn’t even spell your name right,” Hernandez shouts after Gyllenhaal as he walks away.
The clip ends with a shot at the conceit itself: “Whatever,” Hernandez says resignedly. “It’s a fake yearbook for a promo anyway.”
Saturday’s episode is the season finale of SNL’s 49th season. It’ll be Gyllenhaal’s third turn as host, having previously served in 2007 and 2022. Musical guest Sabrina Carpenter is set to make her SNL debut.
