The fourth time is the charm, maybe…?
Former Patriots/Bucs tight end and four-time Super Bowl champ Rob Gronkowski made his annual pilgrimage to NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this Wednesday night, to proffer his prediction for this year’s Big Game.
And in doing so, hopefully wind up breaking a three-year losing streak.
Super Bowl LX will take place Sunday, February 8, at the 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., pitting the NFC’s Seattle Seahawks against the AFC’s New England Patriots. Seattle is seeking their second-ever Super Bowl win, while the Pats are chasing a record seventh title.
In this rematch of Super Bowl XLIX (which the Patriots won by a score of 28-24), the Seahawks—as of Wednesday evening—are favored by 4.5 points.
Gronk’s Tonight Show prognostication record is, as noted above, not great! In 2023, he picked the Eagles over the Chiefs; the latter went on to win 38-35. In 2024, he chose the 49ers over the Chiefs; Kansas City proved him wrong again, with a 25-22 win. A year ago, Gronk tried to zag by not betting against the Chiefs, only to see them lose, bigly, to the Eagles by a score of 40-22.
During Gronkowski’s latest Tonight Show drop-by, host Jimmy Fallon offered a FaceTime-a-Friend lifeline in the form of seven-time Super Bowl champ Tom Brady, but was rebuffed. “I would, but I know he wouldn’t answer. I’m not a supermodel,” Gronk quipped. (Too bad he declined Fallon’s offer, as Brady just minutes earlier had stupefied guest Kendall Jenner with stats during their own on-air FaceTime.)
So, who is NFL vet Gronkowski banking on to improve his fortune? “I’m going to break the trend of being wrong, and I’m going with the New England Patriots,” he declared. For Super Bowl LX, he picked the Patriots to again best the Seahawks, and by “the same exact score” as their 2015 championship game clash, 28-24.
