Stephen Colbert recently got a meaningful sendoff from back home—and used The Late Show Monday night to share it.
At the top of the show’s second act, Colbert addressed a recent resolution passed by the South Carolina Senate honoring him ahead of the program’s final episode later this spring.
“Folks, if you watch this show, it is no secret that I love my home state of South Carolina,” he said, noting that for the past decade he’s delivered his monologue atop a stage mark in the shape of the state, embedded in the floor. “I have literally done this entire show standing on my home state.”
He then rolled a clip of the resolution being read aloud on the Senate floor by the chamber’s reading clerk, formally recognizing “Stephen Tyrone Colbert, a native son of South Carolina, upon the occasion of the final episode of The Late Show.”
“Why, thank you, sir,” Colbert said. “I appreciate it. That touches me.”
The resolution—introduced March 25 by eight South Carolina state senators—praises Colbert’s “outstanding contributions to American television, comedy, and public discourse,” tracing his path from Charleston to The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and CBS’s Late Show.
“South Carolina might be the reddest state in the Union,” Colbert noted. “This would be like if Donald Trump threw me a surprise going-away party. Which he kinda did.”
“It is an honor I did not expect, but I take it as a sincere compliment and a bit of good news,” Colbert said. “’Cause a lot of folks have been asking what I’m doing after May 21. Well, for the first time in a long time, I can safely say—I think I’m goin’ home.”
Colbert and his wife, Evie McGee Colbert—also a native of the state—have long split their time between homes in New Jersey and the Charleston area. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple even installed a professional “Pandemic Studio” in their South Carolina home, broadcasting The Late Show remotely for more than 450 days.

I think we get a run at some point somewhere
Perhaps, but his dumb sister got beat by Mark Sanford of all people some years ago.
But if he does run for some office on a state level, it might be embarrassing for him and his family. Lots of Eric Swalwell (D) stuff around Colbert that’s itching to get out.
You gonna acknowledge that, while you scream hypocrisies concerning Swalwell? At least Democrats acknowledge when their side screws up! You guys won’t when it comes to your Dear Predator Drumpf!
They do? Did Kimmel acknowledge Swalwell’s scandals last night considering he is good friends with quasi rapist Swalwell (D)?
And Democrats knew about Swalwell for years and only released the information to get rid of the threat of a Republican winning California.
As expected here we have another excellent example of the dim wits and rancid character of all Trumpsters and why we can never trust any of them in any capacity, but especially around children.
Your problem is that you consider everyone to the left of you as being criminally suspect! And that falls under the late night category, where you want to arrest Kimmel for being in association with Swalwell!
That’s why you don’t deserve to be taken seriously here, boy!
Your hyper fixation on Swalwell and his relationship w/Kimmel is more demented than the misconduct he was accused of~
Kimmel doesn’t owe anyone his feelings about the resignation, especially YOU. And I hope he doesn’t have to the rest of the week just to show that he puts personal relationships aside for the bigger picture regarding the true stakes with Midterms happening later this year~
He can play the same rules as other right-wing media outlets undercutting the misconduct and worse allegations of the real leaders in power.
I love Stephen Colbert and have followed his career for years. I am deeply saddened by his show being cancelled,I love his show and watch it every night. He is a survivor and will be fine wherever he goes I know. I sure will miss his show. His comedy is the greatestand I love his band too. I go to sleep every night having laughed my ass off. I love you Stephen thank you for being you,and neverever stop and if you run for president, you have got my vote!❤️
Well all that put a guilty verdict on Trump by associations. The same should apply to Kimmel assocation with Swawell. He’s guilty. See how easy that works.
That’s a word salad you’re spouting off there!
