Stellan Skarsgård Makes Two SNL Cameos as Son Alexander Hosts

It was a family affair on Saturday Night Live this weekend, as host Alexander Skarsgård was joined by his father Stellan in not one but two sketches.

Alexander made his SNL hosting debut in the show’s last airing ahead of NBC’s weeks-long, wall-to-wall Winter Olympics coverage. His father Stellan Skarsgård, a newly minted Academy Award nominee (for Sentimental Value), had never appeared on the long-running sketch series in any capacity.

But in a pair of joint appearances this weekend, the Skarsgårds—who haven’t appeared together in the same project for more than 15 years—got to bring the funny.

In a follow-up to last November’s “Norwegian Movie” sketch (featuring host Glen Powell, Chloe Fineman and James Austin Johnson), Alexander Skarsgård this time served as Fineman’s scene partner, in the Mikey Day-directed Stench of a Family. (Jane Wickline was also winningly back with the clapboard.)

This time, not only were the dour film’s stars jarringly giggly between takes, but Alexander’s was determined to make the very nonexistent “blooper reel.”

In the final scene they filmed, Alexander’s character went to confront his father, who was fully dressed (in a suit) in a bath tub. As the camera panned right, and the studio audience erupted with cheers, we saw that the elder Skarsgård was playing the role.

The subsequent sketch, “Immigrant Dad Talk Show,” was a local neighborhood chat hosted by Marcello Hernandez’s character, and seemingly held in someone’s back yard. Alexander’s character, a guest addressing the topic of father-son affection, shared that once upon a time, while seated in a sauna, he and his dad accidentally touched kneecaps. “Tell no one of this,” Alexander said he was told at the time.

Alas, just as he relayed this long-held secret, his dad, played by a midriff-baring Stellan Skarsgård, lurched into frame to scold his boy: “I told you to tell no one of this!”

Prior to their SNL scenes, the Skarsgårds rarely have shared the screen together, as actors—and certainly not in recent years.
