One of Netflix’s upcoming standup specials will be coming direct from Domingo—or rather, the man behind that character.
Saturday Night Live‘s Marcello Hernández is apparently prepping a new comedy special for Netflix. That intel comes courtesy of a new Rolling Stone profile of the comic. The magazine was present for a show Hernández performed at Georgia’s Helium Comedy Club in March, noting he was using the show to work out new material for the upcoming special.
The standup special will be Hernández’s first, although he’s maintained an active standup career since 2019.
Hernández joined SNL in 2022, months after performing at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival.
He has since become one of the show’s breakout stars as a center of sketches like “Immigrant Dad Talk Show” and one half of “Weekend Update” duo The Couple You Can’t Believe Are Together (alongside Jane Wickline). Then, of course, there’s his TikTok-viral “Domingo” character, which he has taken from a pair of SNL sketches to the SNL50 anniversary special and even a Sabrina Carpenter concert.
Though details about his yet-to-be-officially announced Netflix special are scarce, Rolling Stone describes his material as largely coming “directly from his upbringing”—a description that aligns with some of what Hernández has brought to SNL in various Update pieces
Hernández’s Netflix special is expected to drop on the streaming service sometime later this year. First up for the comic: the final three epsiodes of Saturday Night Live, starting this weekend with host Quinta Brunson
This 50th anniversary year of SNL has been extraordinarily unfunny. The bright lights that keep me staying up late on Saturday nights include Marcello Hernandez. I find him to be funny, engaging, and clearly enthusiastic in every skit in which he appears. I will renew my Netflix subscription when the date for his special is announced.
