SNL UK to Stream in Canada, Raising Hopes for U.S. Distribution

A Canadian streamer is set to give prospective Saturday Night Live UK fans what they Crave, all as Stateside viewers continue to await word on their ability to watch the upcoming SNL offshoot.

Not longer after it was announced that SNL UK will premiere across the pond Saturday, March 21 (airing on Sky and streaming on NOW), Canada’s Crave—home of the buzzy hockey/gay romance drama Heated Rivalry—has inked a deal to stream the sketch comedy series’ six-episode freshman run.

SNL UK is a natural fit for Crave as we continue to bring globally recognized, culturally relevant programming to our audiences—shows that spark conversation, break through, and feel unmistakably of the moment,” says Justin Stockman, Bell Media’s VP of Content Development & Programming. “This is a comedy franchise with an unmatched legacy, and we’re thrilled to be the home of this exciting new chapter.”

While this is great news for our friends up north, consider the clock officially tick-tick-ticking on a Stateside home being announced for SNL UK. Who will step up to the plate?

SNL UK is being produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio’s UK production team and Broadway Video, the latter of which was founded by SNL creator Lorne Michaels. Michaels will have a hands-on role in executive-producing SNL UK.

Given the Universal Television of it all, it’s possible that NBC could air SNL UK hours after each episode’s across-the-pond premiere, in the “SNL Vintage” spot that precedes SNL proper on Saturday nights.

And/or if SNL UK lands a U.S. streaming home (à la BBC One’s Ghosts on Paramount+), Peacock would be the obvious option—similarly keeping the Michaels production in-house and all that.

SNL UK reps had no updates to share on either front as of Tuesday morning.

Broadcast live each week from BBC Studios’ storied TC1 studioSNL UK promises to deliver “the high-wire, anything-can-happen energy that makes SNL a cultural force, reimagined through a distinctly British lens. A guest host will take the helm each week, putting their distinctive stamp on the SNL formula alongside a chart-topping musical guest.”

Each episode will be staged in front of a live studio audience and feature an opening monologue, topical sketches, live music, and a UK take on “Weekend Update.”

I can’t help think they did this to broaden the show’s audience because nobody wants to watch *American* shows anymore? Not that Canada will be any more receptive but at least it’s something extra.
