Sarah Sherman Says She ‘Would Love’ to Anchor ‘Weekend Update’

With Colin Jost and Michael Che rumored to be leaving their posts at SNL‘s Weekend Update next season, Sarah Sherman is throwing her hat in the ring to replace them.

Asked in a new interview with Vanity Fair.whether she’d consider anchoring the show’s long-running news segment, Sherman answered without hesitation.“Of course, I would love to. Are you kidding me?” she replied.

The SNL star went on to say that she wouldn’t have been open to the idea when she first joined the show four years ago. “I would never have seen two people sitting at a desk in suits and been like, ‘Oh, I should probably do that,’” she recalled. “I’m obsessed with Norm Macdonald, she continued. “To even think for one second, I can do what Norm Macdonald did—what am I, insane?”

She seems to have warmed to the idea four years later, as she herself has become a regular at the “Weekend Update” desk, logging six appearances this season alone—the most of any of her castmates. Of possibly taking on anchor duties, she now says,“It looks so fun. I’ll do anything that’s fun.”

Jost and Che’s departure after a record ten years behind the “Weekend Update” desk is purely speculation at this point, fueled in part by this weekend’s booking of Jost’s wife Scarlett Johansson as host. Che has repeatedly implied that he plans after this season, but he’s said as much in past years and ended up returning.

If Jost and Che do step down, there would likely be an extensive search for their replacement(s). At other times of transition for the mid-show news segment, Lorne Michaels and team have screen-tested multiple cast members, writers, and others for the role.

SNL‘s season finale airs this Saturday, May 17 on NBC.
