It’s turning out to be a big day for Ronny Chieng: Just minutes before it was announced that he’ll handle this week’s Tuesday through Thursday hosting duties on The Daily Show in the lead-up to Election Week, Netflix released the details of his long-awaited new stand-up special.
The special, titled Love To Hate It, will have its global Netflix premiere on December 17. It marks Chieng’s third stand-up special for the streamer following 2019’s Asian Comedian Destroys America! and 2022’s Speakeasy (which was named Best Stand-Up Special at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards).
Love To Hate It was filmed during Chieng’s stand-up tour of the same name, which is ongoing with upcoming dates in November and December. It was filmed during a sold-out, five-night run at the Hawai’i Theatre in Honolulu.
According to a Netflix press release, Love To Hate It is an “extremely personal special [that] hilariously unpacks the indignities of the IVF process, the pitfalls of being a man on the internet, American politics, and the place of the older generation in today’s world.” The special was directed by Cameron Barnett and counts Chieng, his wife Hannah Pham, and comedian Bill Burr among its executive producers.
The special will cap off what has been a busy year for Chieng. In addition to his stand-up tour and regular work as a senior correspondent and regular host of The Daily Show (for which he shared in this year’s Emmy win for Outstanding Talk Series), he has maintained a busy voice acting career with credits on Grimsburg, Kung Fu Panda 4, Mulligan, and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. He also appeared in Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts movie, Unfrosted, and will star alongside Jimmy O. Yang in Interior Chinatown, Taika Waititi’s upcoming miniseries for Hulu, which premieres on November 19.
Love to Hate It will arrive on Netflix on Tuesday, December 17.
