Jimmy Fallon’s first-ever surprise musical guest apparently an encore planned—with an entirely different backing band.
One night after Phoebe Bridgers made an unannounced appearance on The Tonight Show to perform the worldwide television debut of “Lost Boys,” Fallon teased another mystery musical performance Wednesday—and Bridgers emerged once again.
This time, she delivered a stripped-down acoustic version of the same song backed by three considerably older musicians, a deliberate visual reversal of the nine children who had played alongside her the previous night.
Fallon had again alerted viewers after his monologue that an unannounced musical guest was waiting in the wings.
Tuesday’s reveal featured Bridgers performing with nine young musicians, all of whom played instruments during the number. Wednesday’s older, considerably smaller backing band gave the return appearance the feel of a sequel—and suggested the contrasting lineups were very much part of the plan.
“Lost Boys” is the lead single from Bridgers’ upcoming album Lost Weekend, her first solo full-length release since 2020’s Punisher. The album is scheduled for release August 14.
Fallon made a point Tuesday of noting that he had never before presented an unannounced musical guest during his late-night career.
Twenty-four hours later, the once-in-17-years booking stunt had become a two-night residency.
