Former Late Show Writers Launch New Comedy Podcast

Two former Late Show with Stephen Colbert writers have found their next thing. But also, apparently, several other things.

Michael Cruz Kayne and Asher Perlman—the Colbert vets behind But Also, a new podcast whose title doubles as its organizing principle—are keeping their creative partnership going after The Late Show.

“When we learned The Late Show was ending, we immediately started thinking of a way to continue collaborating and talking through culture and politics with each other AND also have a great excuse to keep hanging out,” Kayne and Perlman wrote in an Instagram post announcing the show.

The show’s first episode makes good on that promise, with Katie Nolan, the Emmy-winning sports commentator and comedian, joining the duo for a conversation that wanders from vaginal microbiomes to Macklemore, Zohran Mamdani, Trump nicknames, the Knicks, the Nets, Jeopardy!, and My Cousin Vinny.

What it does not appear to include—at least in episode one—is any direct talk about The Late Show itself. But the new project is clearly an extension of the working relationship Kayne and Perlman built there.

Both hosts will be familiar to regular Colbert viewers. Perlman was the star of Colbert’s recurring “Prove It” segment, which chronicled his spectacularly ill-advised 2025 New Year’s resolution to recreate Ja Morant’s double-pump, two-handed reverse dunk, while Kayne most recently popped up during the show’s final-week “Worst of The Late Show” special, joining Colbert and Paul Shaffer for his long-rejected parody of Shaffer’s own Weather Girls classic, “It’s Raining Men.”

The podcast is the latest stop in the pair’s post-Late Show reinvention tour. Kayne and Perlman are also continuing their live UCB show, Michael and Asher Try Everything, which they began performing on a nearly monthly basis in late 2025. Their next show is set for Saturday, June 20.
