John Mulaney could be setting the stage for a moment in rock history. This week’s Everybody’s Live will pair team up rockers Kim Deal and Kim Gordon for a rare joint performance.
Both are both veterans of the alt rock scene dating back to the 1980s: Deal fronts The Breeders and was a member of the Pixies, while Gordon co-founded and led Sonic Youth alongside ex-husband Thurston Moore.
In a video announcement released by Netflix today, Mulaney confirmed that the pair will be “playing together.”
While the two musicians were peers, the only time they collaborated was back in 1995. Deal contributed vocals to “Little Trouble Girl,” a track off Sonic Youth’s album Washing Machine.
Deal went on to appear with Gordon in the music video for the song when it was released as a single the following May. However, there have been no known live performances of the song to date—either by Sonic Youth or either of the Kims. (Sonic Youth disbanded in 2011 amid Gordon and Moore’s divorce.)
The two recently reunited for a conversation published in Interview Magazine in December. Deal released her debut solo record, Nobody Loves You More, in November. Last year also brought the release of Gordon’s second solo album, The Collective.
Mulaney’s guest lineup is typically reflects his taste, and in 2023 he included two Sonic Youth tracks in a playlist of fifty “beloved tracks” for Spotify. Mulaney previously staged a rare televison performance by“one of [his] favorite bands,” Joyce Manor, on his talk show last year.
Neither Gordon nor Deal have revealed what’s in store for their performance this Wednesday. On her Instagram, Gordon simply teased fans to tune in “for Kim & Kim.”
Could Everybody’s Live be planning the first-ever live performance of Kim Gordon and Kim Deal’s nearly twenty-year-old song? Tune to find out when it streams live this Wednesday, March 19, at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT.
I bet they wouldn’t have to twist his arm too much to get Thayil to drop a guitar solo.
