Kenan Thompson brought back one of his most memorable SNL characters this week as French stand-up comic Jean K. Jean made his first appearance on the show in more than a decade.
Jean, billed as the most popular comedian on the French version of Def Comedy Jam, made frequent visits to “Weekend Update” over a five-year period starting in 2008. His last appearance was in May 2013.
His return came not on “Weekend Update,” but in a bit part in a sketch featuring a series of performers on a European cruiseline, where, in true Jean K. Jean fashion, he delivered a joke about a cassoulet made with Impossible meat.
“Man, I about took my ass all the way to Brussels,” began the punchline. “I turned around and I said, you’re damn right it’s Impossible meat, ’cause c’est impossible to eat it.”
He followed up the joke with the requisite “Zut alors!” and hip hop before making his exit.
The character itself was first dreamed up by longtime SNL writer (and frequent Thompson collaborator) Bryan Tucker, who, in a piece he wrote for Slate in 2014, recalled pitching Thompson the character one Tuesday night.
“I said, ‘His name is Jean K. Jean, and he’s the top Def Jam comedian in Europe. So instead of referencing roaches and ass-whoopings, he talks about Vespas and Gruyere cheese.’ Before I was done talking, Kenan had already settled on my couch. ‘I love it. Let’s do it.’ We wrote Jean K. Jean’s first appearance in about 45 minutes.”
All told, Jean made nine appearances on “Weekend Update” before he found himself on Thompson’s long list of retired characters—a byproduct of his record-breaking 23-season run on SNL. (Also on that list: D.J. Dynasty Handbag of “Deep House Dish,” last seen in 2009; Grady Wilson, last seen in 2011; and “What Up with That?” host Diondre Cole, last seen in 2021.)
